Skagen Painters were a group of Scandinavian artists who came together around the turn of the twentieth century in Skagen, Denmark’s northernmost point, where two oceans meet. They formed a particular school of painting, inspired by the unique quality of the light in Skagen. “This country is mild, smiling, fantastic, mighty, wild, wonderful and awe-inspiring …. it is Skagen – there is no other place on the face of this earth like it” This is how the Norwegian painter Christian Krohg described Skagen.

P. C. Skovgaard - Danish Golden Age reassessed now makes it possible to rediscover this painter, whose works form an indispensable part of the Denmark image that still dominates our culture and self-image: In Skovgaard was beech forest cemented as a national treasure. The book goes one step further and presents lesser known aspects of his work: Skovgaard traveled beyond its borders and was inspired by both German romanticism as alien landscapes in Italy, Sweden, Britain and France - as he experimented with crossing artistic sensibility and a scientific view of the world.
