A learned archaeologist presents a survey of the political art from the Roman Empire. Architecture, coins, friezes, statuary and frescoes are analyzed to demonstrate how the Romans cleverly used these forms to disseminate propaganda and how this influenced Rome’s development from an oligarchic republic to a theocratic monarchy. This is a highly interesting work, and is suitable for both layman and scholar alike.

This book offers extensive studies of who was commemorated, where, when, and why, by surveying the bases the purloined images stood upon. The reason the bases are studied is due to the fact that most Roman imperial statues were made of bronze which was melted down at the first opportunity to sell for the valuable scrap metal. This book draws upon 2,300 known bases from nearly 800 sites. Højte takes a look at the geographical distribution, statues dedicated before and after a reign, occasions for statue erections, and dedicators. The study presented here is an expansion on Højte’s 2001 Ph.D. dissertation for the University of Aarhus.

This inaugural issue of Romantik: Journal for the Study of Romanticisms contains seven articles that explore the connection between Romanticism and the political sphere. This topic has long been in need of redefinition. By gathering work from across disciplines with an interdisciplinary or cross-cultural scope, the topic is opened up to new perspectives of investigation. The articles in this first issue present new and exciting analyses of such diverse discourses as mythology, the fairy tale, historiography, elite culture, landscape painting, sculpture and dreaming.

This is the first exhibition to ever take place at the American Swedish Historical Museum in Philadelphia, featuring paintings, drawings, and photographs by members of the Royal Families of Sweden through the centuries. It includes offerings from the Vasa Kings to the Bernadotte. Members of the Royal Court have often visited foreign countries and courts seeking political, economical, cultural, and artistic exchanges, and these influences are very apparent in their art over time, as you will see here.
