A beautiful catalog presenting Ordrupgaard’s art collection from the 19th and early 20th Century. Most of the works testify to Wilhelm Hansen’s interest in the contemporary art of his time in all its various shades: Realism and Naturalism, Impressionism and Symbolism. Apart from later acquisitions by artists such as Hammershøi and L.A. Ring, most were collected by Hansen between 1892 and 1918. This catalog documents his knack for collecting, and provides detailed information on included artists: C.W. Eckersberg, Christen Købke, Wilhelm Marstrand, Theodor Philipsen, Johannes Larsen, P.C. Skovgaard, Paul Cezanne, Gustave Courbet, Berthe Morisot, Paul Gauguin, Auguste Renoir and many more.

Julius Paulsen was a very fine painter of portraits and people, capturing with soft brush strokes their inner spark, their humanity. Of great interest also are his landscapes of his native Denmark, which are infused with a gentle northern light. Paulsen painted during the period in the 19th century referred to as the Golden Age of Danish painting; his work is a credit to his time.

The Danish painter Theodor Philipsen (1840-1920) has always been considered a major figure in the history of Danish art – not because of his motifs, which with their hundreds of cows, horses and chickens continue the tradition of Golden Age animal painting, but rather because of his strong stylistic contribution to Danish art. From the beginning of the 1880s it was above all Impressionism that influenced his painting, especially through his friendship with Paul Gauguin. This catalog, presenting 47 paintings, includes articles that cover the many aspects of his Impressionist style.
