Jenny Nyström (1854-1946) has always been one of the most loved illustrators in Sweden. She has depicted the childrens’ world with valor and she believed herself that this was due to her love for children. She was a sought after and well paid illustrator and as the sole supporter of her family, she was forced to take whatever she could get in order to make ends meet. That she also was a very talented artist with a solid academic education both from the Art Academy in Stockholm and from Paris is perhaps not as well known. Her versatility is reflected herein, including academic painting. Illustrations from books, newspapers and documentaries are all covered in this book.

Exhibition catalog from Norway’s National Gallery in 1988. The past 100 years in Norwegian painting must be seen in relation to the prolonged stays abroad of these artists; the homeland was always seen partly from afar, partly from within. Munch and the Skagen group figure in this scenario, and the essay ties social and political realities to the paintings shown. A good overview.

This fascinating book tells the story of citrus fruits from earliest times. Brought back from India by Alexander the Great, citrus proved to be a lifesaver on sea voyages, since it was the antidote for scurvy. Columbus took it to the new world. The Italians, French and Spaniards made the citrus plants a centerpiece of their castles, monasteries and cities. Citrus fruit was also used for cosmetics, perfumes, confections, and liqueurs. A beautiful book, so sumpteously illustrated.
