Here is a definitive, 3-volume work about Christen Købke, who was an exemplar of the Golden Age of Danish painting in the 19th century. Volume 1 (OMKRING KASTELLET) traces Købke’s family and the times in Denmark, his period in the city of Århus, his collaboration with C.W. Eckersberg and Niels Lauritz Høyen, the influences of Christianity, classicism, and nature in his work. The scholarship of this book and all three volumes is of the highest order, as are the reproductions of Købke’s art. Volume 2: DOSSERINGEN OG FREDERIKSBORG concentrates on the period of time he spent in different areas of Scandinavia, and contains many beautiful landscape paintings. Featured also are Købke’s masterful portraits, along with his delicate renderings. Volume 3: ITALIEN TUR-RETUR (Back and Forth to Italy) includes wonderful landscapes painted during the time he spent in Italy, as well as his later works from Scandinavia. As in the other two volumes, the scholarship and quality of the reproductions here are of the highest order. This work should be in the library of all serious students of Scandinavian as well as 19th-century art.

The National Gallery of Denmark owns the world’s largest collection of L.A. Ring’s paintings, including fine examples of virtually all aspects of his work. The selection of works featured in this publication, all of which hail from the SMK Collection, shows the breadth of Ring’s artistic work and aims to introduce readers to one of the most interesting Danish Oeuvres from the time around 1900, a time when fellow Danish artists such a Vilhelm Hammershøi, Anna Ancher and J.F. Willumsen also made original, distinctive contributions to new stylistic , formal and subject related innovations in Danish, and in a wider sense, European visual arts. It is the hope of this publication that it will help awaken interest and appreciation of L.A. Ring’s wondrous painterly world, not just in Denmark, but around the world.

Janus La Cour (1837-1909) one of the foremost landscape painters of 19th-Century Denmark. These landscapes have a clearness and optimism about them; they look so real that one feels like stepping right into them and experience the lushness of the nature in Denmark. He in particular depicted Eastern Jutland around Aarhus.
