Here, we see the full creative cycle of Swedish impressionist painter Ernst Josephson (1851-1906), from his mythical paintings to his poetry. Though he was one of the most well-known and loved figures from late 19th century’s Nordic art scene, today he remains relatively unknown outside of Sweden. A wonderful way to familiarize yourself with Josephson’s life and work, from his art education in Stockholm, his travels and the typically-Swedish subject matter of his paintings.

This stunning catalogue presents portraiture by five Finnish classic artists: Elin Danielson-Gambogi, Albert Edelfelt, Akseli Gallen-Kallela, Helene Schjerfbeck, and Maria Wiik. The works range from the plein air paintings of the 1800s to Schjerfbeck’s modernist paintings. The exhibition focuses on Finland’s golden age of painting in the early 1900s, a period of unbridled innovation. In this period, classical portraiture was increasingly replaced by an expressionist approach. This granted artists greater expressive freedom in capturing the personality of their subjects while also employing their own unique creative style.

Theodor Severin Kittelsen (1857-1914) was a Norwegian painter, draftsman and illustrator and is still one of the most popular artists in Norway. Kittelson became famous for his nature paintings, as well for his illustrations of fairy tales and leends, especially of trolls. He is sometimes called the Father of the Norwegian Trolls. A great introductory volume to get to know Kittelsen better.
