The aim of this book is to present to an international audience the medieval sculpture of Uppsala Cathedral, in particular that of the High Middle Ages to be found mainly in the choir, where in the decades around 1300 French workshops were at work, among them that of Estienne de Bonnueill. The emphasis is on the figural material and its interpretation, but examples are also given of the foliate ornament, which is of a very high standard. Part of the book is devoted to a series of reliefs on the corbels around the sanctuary. According to the author, its program was most probably intended to be used primarily in the spiritual guidance offered by the church. The book also gives an expose´ of the figures on the capitals and portals. The imagery here consists in part of sometimes rather unorthodox fabulous beasts, no doubt partly products of the sculptors’ imagination.

This exhibition centers on the recent acquisition of a monumental drawing of an old man’s head, executed and signed by Jean-Baptiste Greuze. This same image is found in his painting “The Lame One”, which is in the Hermitage in St. Petersburg.

Lundberg was a young portrait painter, who left Sweden during the difficult years at the end of Charles XII:s reign but returned in 1745 . He became an immediate and lasting success and evenutally became a Court painter. In this, the first monograph on Lundberg since 1902, the authors deal with Lundberg’s artistic development and studio practices as well as his career strategies, particularly in Paris where the competition among the pastel painters was very keen. His Swedish career and the portrait types he created are discussed in relation to the ideological, social and political tensions of the times, as well as the stylistic and thematic influences from French literary, philosophical and artistic developments. The circumstances of his life and contempoary evaluations of his work are also taken as a starting point of a discussion of the Swedish art scene and market, as well as the artist’s role in Swedish society during the 18th century.
