Since the 1990s Annika von Hausswolff has made her mark as one of the major artists in Scandinavia. Her use of the photographic medium is usually conceptual, feminist and analytical, and she belongs to the circle of young fine-art photographers who view and utilize the photograph in a novel way. Her photographs are charged with mystery. They are Surrealist in expression and full of recurrent personal motifs that often refer back to her own childhood memories. The exhibition represented in this book is the artist’s most extensive museum exhibition to date, including both photographic and sculptural works from the 1990s until today. It includes a new and site-specific work created especially for the exhibition: a 12 meter long piece of wallpaper in black and white showing a search party out looking for a missing person or persons. Beautifully designed and lushly illustrated, this book is a truly artful presentation in itself.

The painting of Wachtmeister is an exuberant poetry of bright color and semi-abstraction, with influences from Post-Impressionism, Matisse, and Picasso’s classical profiles and collage-like juxtapositions of color, shape, and pattern. These vibrant, sensual paintings reflect a distinctive joy in life. Wachtmeister has exhibited her work to great acclaim in both the U.S. and Europe.
