In January 1998, a bronze sculpture was installed by the German painter Günther Förg in front of Boggalleriet in Rønde. It was erected on private initiative, but in the public space, and thus was Rønde one of the few places in Denmark where the cityscape can see a sculpture of a foreign artist. The layout of Günther Förgs stele was the first step in the project Open Water, working with an art and urban project in Rønde center. In the book Lars Morell interprets the stele by putting it in the context of the specific environments in Rønde. Likewise, he compares the sculpture to seven steles at Louisiana set with nature as background. The book ends with a conversation between Günther Förg and Lars Morell. Here Günther Förg tells why he, who is a painter, makes sculptures. The book has a loose dust jacket by Günther Förg printed as an original lithograph by Hostrup-Pedersen & Johansen.

Only during the past decade has an audience outside Denmark started to take notice of the great Danish artist Poul Gernes (1925-1996), which led to this ground-breaking retrospective exhibition and its catalog. Gernes, who believed that the person behind the artwork was irrelevant, rejected easel painting early in his life, feeling that it was more important to combine art with a useful function. He called himself a “decorator,” and created more than 150 site-specific interiors and exteriors all over Denmark. Gernes founded the Experimenting Art School, known as the Eks-Skolen, in 1960, and tirelessly promoted the idea of art as a socially conscious, collective enterprise. This beautiful catalog also includes his 48 x 48-inch “target paintings,” their clear and vibrant colors typical of Gernes commitment to the simplest and most immediate expression of art.

A comprehensive exhibition of the characteristic work of Alberto Giacometti (1901-1966), the Swiss artist, whom we all know by his tall skinny figurative bronze sculptures. It is refreshing to see his abstract, sculptural work in marble as well as bronze and his classic, yet modern figurative drawings.
