Here is a definitive, 3-volume work about Christen K?bke, who was an exemplar of the Golden Age of Danish painting in the 19th century. Volume 1 (OMKRING KASTELLET) traces K?bke?s family and the times in Denmark, his period in the city of ?rhus, his collaboration with C.W. Eckersberg and Niels Lauritz H?yen, the influences of Christianity, classicism, and nature in his work. The scholarship of this book and all three volumes is of the highest order, as are the reproductions of K?bke?s art. Volume 2: DOSSERINGEN OG FREDERIKSBORG concentrates on the period of time he spent in different areas of Scandinavia, and contains many beautiful landscape paintings. Featured also are K?bke?s masterful portraits, along with his delicate renderings. Volume 3: ITALIEN TUR-RETUR (Back and Forth to Italy) includes wonderful landscapes painted during the time he spent in Italy, as well as his later works from Scandinavia. As in the other two volumes, the scholarship and quality of the reproductions here are of the highest order. This work should be in the library of all serious students of Scandinavian as well as 19th-century art.
