What makes us human beings; what seperates us from the rest of nature? This book poses this question. Archeological finds tell us about early mankind: about the psyche of humankind, the stages of development mentally and physically in the last 3-4 million years. Abstraction, analogy, metaphors is part of the complex human and therefore the art we create. These pictures include paintings in stone, jewelry, weapons and ornaments that convey symbols, the element of ritual and religion.

No ethnic group is so identified with a single state as the Swedes are with Minnesota. Anne Gillespie Lewis explores how this came to be and what impact Swedes have had on the states they would make their own. She discusses churches, lodges, Swedish-language newspapers, and entertainments, and she profiles individuals and groups of immigrants and their descendants. Through anecdotes, letters, and interviews from the immigrants themselves and from their grandchildren, she tells the story of the great Swedish migration. For the many Minnesotans of Swedish ancestry, Lewis provides a remarkably concise portrait of an ethnic group striving to become American while struggling to maintain its ties to tradition.

This book has two main objectives - to provide an overview of Danish research in the Afghan province of Nuristan, as well as to understand the scholar, collector, and man, Lennart Edelberg, who was crucial to its shaping. Ethnography as an academic discipline in Denmark was still in its embryonic stages, when Edelberg visited Nuristan for the first time in 1948 as a member of the Third Danish Expedition to Central Asia (1947-52). Parallel to his work as an upper-secondary schoolteacher in Ribe, Edelberg developed his work in Nuristan throughout the following decades. Through different perspectives from people who worked with him, or shared his research interests, the contributions to this book constitute a mosaic. This mosaic represents Lennart Edelberg, his research interests as well as their legacy for contemporary scholarship.
