A richly illustrated, comprehensive celebration of the life and work of the pop design’s renowned legend.Interior designer, Professor Eero Aarnio (b. 1932) graduated from the Institute of Industrial Arts in Helsinki in 1957. He gained worldwide renown with his Ball Chair, first introduced in 1966. The spirit of optimism of the period and new industrial raw materials made it possible to expand the whole concept of furniture. Aarnio’s significance as a designer is crystallized in the liberation of form. His experimental approach to design ingeniously applies the properties of materials and the designer’s own boundless imagination. Aarnio rose to international prominence with the Ball chair, and has ever since created a vast number of colorful and bold design classics, such as the Pastil Chair, the Bubble Chair, the VSOP Chair, the Pony, the Puppy, the Tomato and the Formula. In recent years Aarnio has been widely appreciated also as a lamp designer. Aarnio’s works are included in the collections of the most prestigious museums in the world, such as Victoria and Albert Museum in London, MOMA in New York and Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein. Eero Aarnio – Designer of Colour and Joy sheds light on Aarnio’s immense production and on his life as well as on the industry’s compelling characteristics from the 1960’s. The book is made in collaboration with the Helsinki Design Museum celebrating Aarnio’s exceptionally productive 50-year career with an inclusive exhibition in 2016. Writers include Silvana Annicchiarico (Director of the Triennale Design Museum, Milan), Sanna Simola (industrial designer) and design writers Laura Houseley (UK), as well as Anna-Kaisa Huusko, Hannu Pöppönen, Aila Svenskberg and Sami Sykkö (all from Finland). The CEOs of the Italian Alessi and Magis design corporations also tell about their collaboration with Eero Aarnio. The gorgeous graphic design of the book is made by the Bond Agency.

The series of photographs illustrates the ability of speed to compress time and space. The body moves at the same speed as the mode of transportation, while one’s thoughts are already somewhere else. The photos are about how quickly you can exist, at least mentally, somewhere else. They portray a feeling of simultaneousness, that everything is happening now. An exciting cutting edge book.
